La Dama e la Luna

By Bud Koenemund

A 100 Word Story

For Lindsay

She moves like a dream, free of daylight cares; her dress billowing in the breeze. Shadow and light dance across her face, teasing her beauty as she twirls; hidden, then revealed in turn. She is perfection in the sun; but here she is more… she is magic. Almost angelic. Immortal in memory.
The lady and the moon are twins – one reflecting light, the other emanating it from within – and all the stars in infinite heaven envy them; wishing they could be nearer such grace.
She inspires both lunacy and peace at once. A solace found in the maelstrom of life.

The Inevitability of Things

By Bud Koenemund

A 100 Word Story

Inspired by Christina Alvarado

He’s always there. Always following. Steadily gaining ground. Inexorably closing in.
Too often, he’s forgotten in the rush of life – until he visits someone close, and we’re reminded of the inevitability of things.
He arrives without joy or malice. He makes no bargains for more time. He expects acceptance, though he is never surprised when people attempt escape.
I turn quickly, trying to catch a glimpse. He is standing in the shadows. Not hiding – that’s not his way. Moonlight glints off the blade of his scythe.
  “Memento mori,” he whispers.
I give a knowing nod, and turn to walk on.

Semicolon

By Bud Koenemund

A 100 Word Story

Her mouth moved along his collarbone; planting gentle kisses as she went. Sliding over his shoulder, she spied a tattoo. Even in the dim light, she recognized the symbol.
  “What’s this?” she asked, quietly.
He turned his head to see what she meant.
  “It’s a semicolon,” he answered.
“I know that,” she said, her fingertips brushing over the ink. “But, why?”
“It’s a punctuation mark used to carry on when you could’ve just ended things,” he explained. “And, some people use it to remember.”
“Remember what?” she prodded, then realized. “Did you…”
“I carried on,” he whispered, pulling her closer.

Last Day

By Bud Koenemund

A 100 Word Story

I had to see you walk away. Of course. Fate wouldn’t let me simply go about my day… and you’d just be gone… and I could ignore your absence. My eye was drawn to you like a firefly’s light in the darkness, while memory replayed moments you hurt me.
We said goodbye already – more than a year ago. I, a fool who thought we’d parted friends, telling you, “I just want you to be happy,” only to find out later how badly trust was misplaced.
I’ll endure one more dagger to the heart. Luckily, there’s nothing left to cut out.

Six Haiku (August 2020 - March 2021)

By Bud Koenemund

Light
Your surreptitious
wave; an incandescent light
in a dreary day.

Declaration
I declare my love
to thee, for I know no way
but all or nothing.

Protection
I offer my heart,
and pray you will protect it
as I protect yours.

Duality
I’m the romantic
type who’ll write you sonnets; then
tie you to the bed.

Longing
I long to feel our
fingers intertwined, and hearts
racing as love grows.

Paradox
Slow motion woman,
you stimulate my senses
and quicken my heart.

In the Ear of the Beholder

For Kitty Boyce

"Fuck me!" Vulgar in
polite society. But,
welcome from your lips.

Darkness and Light

For "Her."

Some say the darkness
is as much a gift as light.
My heart disagrees.

Tortured

For TK

Inspired by Jack, Neal, and Allen

We could see the darkness and were blind in the light. We stood, dumb, as a vomit of colors, and words, and numbers whirled around us. We were everything, and everywhere, not with each other, but within everyone; enveloped by a stream of power, drowned and reborn. It was beautiful. And, more beautiful because it was not limited by any form or definition. The waves swept away all thought of past or future. There was only the now, and we were it, and it would never end. It was an explosion, like the birth of the universe, and the death of everything all at once. We wielded energy, pure and liquid, against a roiling sky of neon. We were omnipotent within the world of our minds; and yet powerless to save ourselves. Our minds burned with the fever of knowledge; knowing everything, comprehending everything, thirsting for more, even as it all fell away as quickly as it came. A hurricane raged around us, stripping away our doubt, revealing in chaos: order. We reached out to touch it, to embrace it, and somehow pull it back within us before consciousness blotted it from our brains; struggling to save some small fragment of it. But, it could not be. It could not live beyond this dream, and so much was lost as our eyes opened, once more blind in the light of day.
